Those of you that are Pro-Choice and think it’s perfectly okay for a woman to have an abortion please answer me this…would you abort a litter of puppies/kittens or any other type of animal for that matter? Or would you think that was cruel? If you wouldn’t abort an animals fetus because you feel as though that would be cruel please explain to me how that is cruel and aborting a human fetus isn’t. I am Pro-Life and curious as to what people will answer to this question.
My mom has actually had two separate stray cats who showed up on her door step sick and starving, both pregnant. She took them in to the vet where they were both given abortions and then spayed. In both cases, the vet said that the cats would probably not have survived without the procedure.
It wasn’t cruel in the least. It was both necessary to save the mother cats’ lives and also reduced the number of unwanted animals that would probably have ended up in a shelter and eventually put to sleep anyhow.
When we got our current cat, she was a kitten, and she was a stray who we were feeding in the garden, who moved into the house. We didn’t even realise she was a female kitten, let alone pregnant.
What happened next is sad; she gave birth to a litter of dead kittens, an action which her body was probably only just ready for, and which caused my mum to find dead kittens in the laundry.
She then mourned her kittens, stealing toys of mine that were the appropriate size, and carrying them around in her mouth, like she would have done the kittens.
We got her neutered, and I can tell you with absolute certainty, if we’d known she was pregnant, we’d have had those kittens aborted. People get cats and dogs neutered all the time, why the fuck would you think people wouldn’t get them abortions if they were inappropriately pregnant?
If we could have prevented my cat giving birth, and we didn’t, THAT would have been cruel.
How cute of the OP to assume that of course pro-choicers will reply with “no, I would not” because OMG KITTEHS, NOOO.
Yes, I’ve also taken a cat to the vet for an abortion, or more specifically, to be spayed, and since we were fairly certain she was already pregnant, her uterus was removed along with her ovaries. She had already had the one litter of kittens we let her have, and they were all still living with us and acting like the babies they hadn’t been in a while (we still have two of them, and the mother. She is 14 years old now). We didn’t want to put her through the strain of having another litter so soon along with being a mother to them.
It’s just life, though, and in the case of my cat anyway, nothing dramatic. She recovered quickly and continued being happy with the kittens she had had. Birthing them had honestly seemed a lot more shaking experience: she’d been young and terrified with no idea of what was suddenly happening to her. I figuratively held her paw through it all and helped her clean and keep warm her newborns until her instincts kicked in and she started getting the hang of it.
Not making her go through it a second time just because a litter was probably already on its way since she got out while in heat… I don’t see how that wasn’t a favor to her, to her already existing kittens, and to the kittens she might have had but we all would have had trouble finding the time and energy to sufficiently care for.
